How to eat an Avocado the Affordable Way!

People love avocados! What is there not to love…they are creamy and fatty…yum!

Because they are so yummy, it can be easy to over use them. For example, I used to top my salad with a whole avocado, which is a lot of avocado (hind-sight).

Well, now that I have become more budget-friendly, I have been experimenting with using 1/2 of an avocado or even 1/4. And guess what!  I have found that I need a lot less than I thought I did to get my avocado fix.

If you think about it, it’s a lot like meat. In our culture, meat is the main part of the meal. But in many other cultures, meat is traditionally served in very small portions…used to accent the meal. Well, why can’t avocados be used this way.

Try it for yourself! Choose a recipe and then use one-half of the amount of avocado that you typically use, and see how it tastes.

Note that some recipes may lend themselves more to this strategy this others. One-quarter of an avocado may get lost in a large salad, but one-half may be the right amount.

You can store the other half of the avocado (with the seed attached) in the fridge wrapped in a paper towel. You may need to slice a thin layer off of the top of the avocado before using.

That’s all!

    1. A few weeks ago a friend of mine sent me a link to your fan page on Facebook and of cosrue I joined. I didn’t know you had the blog until I saw these pics. I just wanted to say thank you for making the local news a lot sunnier . No news is bad news when it comes thru your smile:)

  1. I take half of an avocado and mash it into my home made lime/lemon and olive oil vinaigrette, thus creating an avocado dressing. Doing this creates an amazing dressing that really permeates the entire salad with delicious avocado creaminess.

  2. I totally agree Brandi! I use 1/4 of an avocado on my salad or just on the side of whatever I am eating and it does the trick! We also whip up a quick guacamole batch and use 1-2 TBSP on salads or as a spread on a sandwich. So amazing! Thanks for this quick and to the point blog!
