Okay, let’s get real. I lot of people attempt to use shopping lists, but end up buying way too much when they actually go shopping. So, here’s a quick tip to keep yourself in check while you are at the grocery store.
When you prepare your shopping list, write down all the foods you currently have at the top of the list and all of the food you need to buy at the bottom of the list. Now, if you are like most people, that list at the top (i.e. all the food you currently have) will span several pages.
In general, when starting off with a food budget, it’s a good idea to make a list of all the food you currently have so that you are aware of what you have. Now, you can take greater advantage of this list and bring it to the store with you. Think about it…every time you are tempted to buy something off of your list, you will be quickly reminded of all that you currently have. It’s hard to justify buying a lot of food when you already have a ton a home.

(and I will be honest, this list is a lot shorter than I expected. I have been working on my food budget for a while [I even wrote a book about it], but writing down what I had first really helped me trim down my shopping list. And it forced me to justify what I thought I needed.)
